Varieties

Below are the varieties I am working with and the rats shown are not available but were produced here at Ohana. If you are interested in a variety, please contact me and check our available page. Note that not all will be available to the public.

Mink
This rat is often confused with blue but is actually a light chocolate color with a grey cast. These rats are known for crazy looking molts. There are many different types of minks, American Mink called Lilac, UK Mink, Australian Mink, each one works with other colors the same, but are not compatible. Right now I have UK mink and will be working on reducing recessives and patterns.

Cinnamon
This beautiful dark orange colored rat comes from mixing the agouti gene with the mink gene. The mink gene lightens up the base of the agouti rat and turns it into a brighter color.

Russian Blue

This gorgeous dark grey rat is similar to the Russian blue cat. It is known for the heathering of the hairs giving a brown/yellow sheen on the fur. For Russian blue I will have blazed and a self line.

American Blue

The light grey rat is almost ethereal in appearance. The color can change drastically from the palest grey-blue to a light slate grey. Eyes are black adding to the magical appearance.

Spotted Tabby (Formerly known as Marble)

Named for the similarity to spotted tabby cats.  The gene creates a diluted grey color with the darker spots being the base color. My goal with these rats is to breed out the agouti and have all black bases and improve the temperament. These rats will not available to the public for a few generations.

Ivory

Ivory is probably one of the most stunning looking rats. Ivory is the black eyed gene, (what makes black eyed Siamese) and the albino gene combined. This creates a pure white rat that has black eyes.

Hairless
It speaks for itself but this rat is devoid of most hair on its body. It often appears pink even if the underlying color is darker like agouti or black. These rats start off as haired rats and lose body hair as they age. Sometimes they may keep some long sparse guard hairs, generally around their hips. They may also keep their face hair and whiskers. I prefer my hairless with some hair on their face to keep them from having eye issues. This is not to be confused with double rex which can make the appearance of hairless but is a completely different gene.

Fawn

This orange colored rat has stolen my soul. With its deep orange color and dark ruby eyes, these rats are just stunning. Fawn is a ruby eyed agouti.

Silver fawn

This pink eyed agouti is the red head of the rat world. This rat has light orange fur interspersed with silver hairs that creates a bright beautiful rat that is sure to turn heads. My goals with these rat are to improve type especially the width of the head and structure.

Siamese
Just like a Siamese cat, these rats are have dark colored points on the noses, feet and rumps. This color is very interesting as it is temperature sensitive. The colder the ambient temperature the darker the points will turn out. This temperature is only important during the first molts of the rat’s life. I breed the Siamese in red eye and black eye.

Frosted

Frost can happen on any color. With a frost rat, the tips of the fur on a frosted rat become white or silvered. This is different than silvermane or roan. These rats have become of my favorites as they get more frosted during their first molts and then once they become adults, it looks like their fur has been frosted like a 90’s dye job. My goal with these rats is to introduce blue into the colors, reduce patterns and get rid of the rex gene.

Silver Lilac Merle

I’m proud to say that we now have merle babies in my rattery. This was a long process between me and Crested Rattery to get the merle to appear in the offspring of one of our males. Merle will not available for another generation or so as we are still working on perfecting the appearance and temperament. Merle is a spotting gene that only appears on mink based colors and is greatly seen on lighter mink based colors. This creates a two toned rat similar to the brindling seen in dogs. My merle come in Silver Lilac which is just a gorgeous, grey almost purple looking rat with merle spots. My goal with these rats is to work on temperament, the appearance of the merle and reduce any patterns.

Pearl and Pearl Merle

Our first pearl is finally here as well. This beautiful rat has a white coat that is tipped with mink coloring. Pearl is another gene that only appears on mink. Mixed with Merle, Pearl Merles are some of the most interested looking rats that you can find. Like my merles, it will be a while before these rats are available. My goal with these rats is to lighten up the pearl and work on the appearance of the merle. These rats will not available to the public for a few generations.

Marten

Welcoming Marten into our rattery. We are now the proud owners of 4 beautiful Marten rats. Two black bases and two agouti bases. Marten is known also as the red eyed devil rat as seen by their red eyes. The gene also causes their fur to be lighter and their fur to lighten as they age. They also develop a mask around the muzzles and eyes which are considerably lighter. They may also show points as marten only appears with the help of a C locus gene including Siamese and Himalayan. My goal is to create better temperaments, reduce any and all markings and get rid of all points. These rats will not available to the public for a few generations.

D'Argent (Silvermane)

Welcoming Silvermane to our rattery. This beautiful rat start off fully colored. As they age and molt, the tips of their fur turn clear giving them a silver look to them. They also have a very distinctive mask on their face. They resembles the D'Argent Rabbit breed hence the name. We are starting with one mink hooded male from SMS Exotics.

Harley

Welcoming Harley to our rattery. Harley is a long haired silky rat. Their hair is super soft and long. There are some issues with the harleys, including skin conditions, lactation problems, failure to thrive. My goal is to better then variety and breed against these issues. We currently have three rats, 2 females and 1 male from SMS Exotics.

All of my rats may be available in standard or dumbo ears. I work primarily with standard coat but may at time have bristle coat or rex coats available. I may also have blazes available in the future in certain colors.

If you are looking for unmarked agouti and black self, let me know. I have those as well but I do not post them as they do not sell as well to pet owners.
